This is a joint ENBIS – IMEKO TC21 activity which will take place on May 7th and 8th, 2013, at the National Physical Laboratory in London. Abstracts of up to one A4 page (pdf, Word, LaTeX) are invited by April 8th, 2013, by email to mspi2013@npl.co.uk.

Statistics Sweden and Örebro university invites to Summerschool in Statistics 2013
“Analysis of Survey Data”

August 19-21, Örebro, Sweden

Sample surveys are a cornerstone in production of official statistics as well as in research within many empirical sciences, e.g. economics, geography, psychology, and epidemiology. This summer school addresses the important topic of statistical data analysis under complex survey designs. Problems covered are point estimation, variance estimation and hypothesis testing, and includes treatments of e.g. linear and logit regression analyses and multilevel (mixed) models. Software issues are briefly discussed. The participants of the school will be assumed to have a basic knowledge in statistics including basic regression analysis and ANOVA.

SUREC (Survey Research and Education Centre), Statistics department at Stockholm University, arranges a Short Course on the topic ”The Use of Paradata in Surveys”.

Under Svenska statistikfrämjandets årsmöteskonferens den 22 mars presenterades Årets statistikfrämjare 2012, nämligen Katarina Andersson och Martin Wicklin från radioprogrammet Medierna i P1. De emottog priset från Ordförande Bo Wallentin, och höll sedan ett föredrag där de spelade upp ett antal klipp från sitt program (lyssna här), samt diskuterade ämnet journalisternas olyckliga kärlek till siffror och statistik med deltagarna.

Motivering:
För att via programmet Medierna (SR P1) ha bidragit till ökad
kunskap hos allmänheten gällande vilka slutsatser som kan dras
från en statistisk undersökning, bland annat genom att på ett
förtjänstfullt sätt ha granskat medias ofta okritiska
spridning av undersökningsresultat.

Information from International Year of Statistics:

A writing competition, the second jointly sponsored by the Young Statisticians Section of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and Significance magazine, will celebrate The International Year of Statistics. The first competition, held in 2012, was hugely success with 24 entries; four were published in the magazine.

Anyone is welcome to enter, regardless of membership or affiliation. The only stipulation for the competition is that you be “young” (in career terms, not necessarily in age); that is you must be a student or within the first 10 years of your career.

Before sitting down to compose your article, the organizers suggest that you can read last year’s winning entry and a runner-up entry plus learn more about the writing competition and what makes a submitted article stand out. In light of the success of last year’s competition, the sponsors are encouraging more young writers to put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard!

Entries should be submitted via email to significance@rss.org.uk as a text or Word file or as a PDF. The submission deadline is June 1.

Significance is published jointly by the RSS and the American Statistical Association and is for anyone interested in statistics and the analysis and interpretation of data.

Som en del av firandet av det internationella statistikåret 2013 inleder Statistiska institutionen på Stockholms universitet samarbete med en gymnasieskola – Cybergymnasiet vid Odenplan!

”- Anledningen till att det är viktigt att samarbeta med Statistiska institutionen är att eleverna på Cybergymnasiet ska få en större syn på statistik än vad de har idag, säger Karin Lagnemo. Många elever ser bara statistik som matematik och förstår inte att det faktiskt används som ett verktyg i flera andra ämnen som exempelvis samhällskunskap och geografi.”
